This booklet argues for a better integration of philosophy with public future health technological know-how, an integration that's exemplified by way of the case of medical reasoning throughout the BSE affair. it is going to accordingly be of curiosity to complex scholars, lecturers, researchers and execs within the components of public healthiness technology and epidemiology, in addition to philosophical disciplines similar to casual common sense, argumentation and fallacy conception and epistemology.

Marsh and Hanson (1979) reported that intradermal inoculation was an efficient means of exposure to the TME agent in the mink in their study. Barlow (1972) found little or no evidence of horizontal (lateral) or vertical transmission in naturally occurring TME (but see Dukur et al. (1986) who reported lateral and maternal transmission and Marsh and Hanson (1979) who described how bite wounds inflicted by littermates could spread the infectious agent between mink). By 1986, TME had been experimentally transmitted to other species including Chinese hamsters (Kimberlin et al.

14 1 BSE – A Leap Into The Unknown Although scrapie can be experimentally transmitted via a number of routes, some have been shown to be more efficient than others. Kimberlin and Walker (1978) found that the intracerebral route was the most efficient, followed by intravenous, intraperitoneal and subcutaneous routes. Kimberlin et al. (1971) reported an increased incubation period in mice which were inoculated with scrapie via the intraperitoneal route. The incubation period was 3–4 weeks longer in the mice in this study than that which is routinely observed in BSVS (bacteria susceptible, virus susceptible) mice which are inoculated intracerebrally with the Chandler strain of scrapie agent.
