If i t r e q u i r e d two ionizations t o produce the effect, then m o r e densely ionizing radiation would be m o r e likely to deposit two ionizations within the volume hit, and t h e r e f o r e m o r e densely ionizing radiations would be m o r e efficient at producing mutations. If, however, it r e q u i r e d only one ionization t o produce the effect, then m o r e densely ionizing radiation would not be m o r e efficient, and, a s a matter of fact, might be found to be l e s s efficient than s p a r s e l y ionizing radiations i n that they might deposit all of t h e i r e n e r g y within a single t a r g e t and so effectively waste ionizations o r dose.

C o n t r a r y to what applies i n cellular radiobiology the p r e s e n t r e s u l t s show that the radiosensitivity i s g r e a t e r in nitrogen than i n oxygen a t m o s p h e r e , f o r x r a y s a s well a s for carbon ions. These r e s u l t s show that compared with nitrogen, oxygen a c t s a s a radioprotective compound o v e r the e n t i r e pH range studied, but the d e g r e e of this oxygen protection i s smaller f o r carbon ions than for x r a y s .
