There may be a referral, or some description of why the person is being assessed. Sometimes, during the assessment, the problem may emerge as being very different from that described in the referral. It may even be that other problems, outside the referral, are focused on. However, it is necessary to be aware of why the assessment is being carried out. • When? Has the person received suitable advance notice and been advised of any information or paperwork that they may need to bring with them to the assessment – for example, details of any medication they may be prescribed?
Yet to acquire real meaning, these skills and techniques need to be supported by values and principles, and always being truthful and open is essential even though it can at times be challenging. As we change as people it is important to continually reflect on our values and views, and be honest with ourselves regarding the empathy we feel towards the service users that we assess.
