The latter quality is determined by an omnipotent decision demon, who endows each first-order demon with a large or small voice. Upon presentation of an object to be classified, each demon shouts his class name, with an intensity dependent upon his own computations and the strength of the voice he has been given. The decision demon, acting rather like a chairman at a meeting where a voice vote is taken, decides which class name has been howled the loudest. Sequential decision procedures are a bit more cumbersome to treat formally, although this can be done.

For the most part we shall be concerned with the recognition problem. ) In this chapter a classification of pattern recognition problems will be presented. The classification scheme generates a number of distinct subclasses of recognition problems. An overview of these types of problems will be given. Subsequent chapters treat the same topics in greater detail. 0 Categorizing Pattern-Recognition Problems GENERAL Pattern-recognition problems vary along three dimensions: the manner in which the organizing set is presented to the observer, the type of pattern classification rule which the recognizer is to produce, and the way in which the objects to be classified can be described.

This implies that natural language analysis programs will have to have complicated mechanisms for addressing a conceptually infinite storage area. A similar conclusion holds for programs designed to perform algebraic manipulations or to prove theorems. These results may seem discouraging, since they tell us that there are a number of interesting problems that cannot be solved by an algorithm, and many more that cannot be solved by a simple one. We conclude with the more optimistic reminder that in practice one can almost always restrict one's attention to a finite subset of the conceivable sentences in the input language and, pragmatically, solve the problem by writing a program which, although it may be large, does not access a conceptually infinite external storage device.
